By: Teddy Hariadi

Many of us who want to lose weight with a 'fast' and generally taking method of Low Carbohydrate Diet (high protein). The bodybuilder is also often used this way to get rid of fat in the body quickly. Apparently there are some things that make this type of diet is dangerous. Do we have to continue to use this method? When will we be wary?

Carbohydrates are the main energy source in our body than proteins and fats. Therefore, the body would prefer carbohydrates to energy source needs. Excess carbohydrates are stored by the body into fat makes many people think to regulate the diet so that a low-carbohydrate, high protein, will make the existing fat can be burned through intensive exercise and the energy needs will be met from a high protein intake.

Carbohydrates have four important functions related to metabolism and exercise performance, namely:
1. The main energy source
2. Enough carbohydrate intakes will help protein maintain the protein cells
3. Help burning fat
4. Fuel for the central nervous system

Reduce your intake of carbohydrates and increase protein in the hope that will help the body burn more fat. But if it is done continuously, during catabolic process, which is protein converted to glucose for energy, protein will be taken from the muscle that would cause the loss of muscle mass. And at the time of the change of the protein into glucose, it produces emissions of nitrogen remaining to be excreted through urine and sweat. Nitrogen is excreted through the urine is clear it will burden the kidneys. So the lower the intake of carbohydrate, the higher the intensity of exercise and the more protein is consumed, in a long time, would harm our kidneys. Many drinking water is expected to launch the process of the kidneys, also would burden the kidney when dieting like this continued for the rest of the exiles still has to pass through our kidneys.

All you have noticed is, check your kidney condition, if any abnormalities either because of genetic or specific disease, do not do this diet. For the very overweight, want to get results fast, this diet can be used, but not more than one month, with record your kidney condition is fine. This dietary pattern as a two-edged blade, use with caution.
