Nursing over the years has become a predominantly a very female oriented job. Generally when you talk of nursing it has become difficult for some to one imagine a male being a nurse. Since the nursing profession demands a lot of patience and delicate handling generally people tend to think only women will apt of this job. This is a misconception, even historically till the mid 18th century men were actually domination nursing profession. Only in the last century of so, especially 3 or 4 decades, that women have taken over from men. Today men only amount to 6 % of the people in nursing profession. If you are male and want to take up nursing profession you need to follow these steps: 1. Try to get admission into a renowned nursing school which would support men in nursing. You can find that out with the amount of male faculty the and number student the nursing school has. Also try to find the about the kinds of hospitals male faculty are posted into while on training. 2. If you do encounter any problems or face any discrimination as male nurse do not hesitate to report it to the people concerned in the nursing faculty. 3. You should be able to interact with women freely as nursing profession is definitely going to continue as a predominantly female oriented profession. So you must be some one who is good in communications skill and well behaved to interact with women. 4. Try and focus an area of specialization which will be apt for men. Fields like emergency nursing, mental health nursing, Ophthalmology nursing, ENT nursing (Ears, nose, throat) can be apt for men. For instance if you take up a fields which involve women health related issues then it would be very difficult to make break through in that area of specialization. 5. You should also understand the fact that being a male nurse would not as well received every where like a female nurse since people are used to female nurses. They might be some critical opinion about you how much so ever good you might be. You must be sportive enough accept that and move on. Taking the criticism to heart and reacting to it is not going to take you anywhere. 6. Make sure you interact and communicate with patients in a very professional manner. Especially if you are dealing female patients you must not make them conscious of the fact that you are a male. They should only look at you a nurse, male or female should not matter to them. With this day and age with professionalism influence various different works of like even the patients are also understanding the fact even a male nurse can be as good as female nurse. In fact lots of women have male nurses as their personal nurses. Male nurses are much more flexible and hard working compared to females. They have work for long hours in the night and can be called to work any time if there are emergencies as it might not be the same case with women.
